What to know before getting started

  • A clinical trial is a research study involving people that helps researchers learn more about potential medications, treatments, devices, or other approaches to healthcare.

  • Every study has its own eligibility requirements, which may include age, medical history, symptoms, medications, or other health factors. Our research team will help determine whether a study may be a good fit for you.

  • Before any study procedures begin, our team will explain the study and provide an Informed Consent Form describing what participation involves, including procedures, potential risks and benefits, and your rights. You’ll have time to review it and ask questions before deciding.

  • Every clinical trial has different potential risks. These may include side effects from an investigational treatment or discomfort from certain study procedures. The specific known and potential risks will be explained to you before you decide to participate.

  • Not always. Some clinical trials may include a placebo or another comparison treatment. If a study uses a placebo, the research team will explain this to you before you decide whether to participate.

  • Yes. Participation is completely voluntary. You can decide to stop participating at any time without penalty or loss of your regular benefits.

  • Compensation depends on the clinical trial. Before you enroll, our team will explain how much you may receive, when payments are made, and whether travel reimbursement is available. Your uploaded study consent, for example, specifies payment by completed visit and potential travel reimbursement.

  • Clinical research has requirements for protecting participant information. Certain authorized organizations may review study records for research, regulatory, or safety purposes, but study reports do not identify participants by name.

  • Not necessarily. Screening helps our research team determine whether you meet the study’s eligibility requirements and whether participation is appropriate and safe for you. If you don’t qualify, that’s okay. When available, we can provide copies of your study-related lab results to share with your healthcare provider.
